Now that we're reading In These Times

here's an interesting piece by Slavoj Žižek on authoritarianism, totalitarianism, and the American crusade. Amy usually finds Žižek to be a little "yeah, so?" but I almost always enjoy him.

Žižek's best point is his showing that Jeanne Kirkpatrick's distinction between "authoritarian" and "totalitarian" was ignored and/or misread. You could claim that there is such a thing as Baathist ideology, and that Saddam Hussein was willing to stake everything on its behalf, but this amounts, in fact, to saying no more than that he was fantatically devoted to self-enrichment.
