Vitriol
Kevin Drum points to the following Fred Barnes Quote (originally noted by Sully):
Senate Democrats have enough votes to block major Bush initiatives like Social Security reform and to reject Bush appointees, including Supreme Court nominees. They may be suicidal, but they could undermine the president's entire second term agenda. At his news conference last week, Bush reacted calmly to their vitriolic attacks, suggesting only a few Democrats are involved. Stronger countermeasures will be needed, including an unequivocal White House response to obstructionism, curbs on filibusters, and a clear delineation of what's permissible and what's out of bounds in dissent on Iraq. This rhetoric sounds suspiciously like a James Dobson childrearing manual.
And also, Mr. Barnes, I say to you "We have not yet begun to obstruct!"

I loathe, loathe, loathe the smarmy Fred Barnes and have done so ever since his days at the New Republic in the 1980s, along with the other Marty Peretz-cultivated far-right fanatics like Charles Krauthammer and Morton Kondracke. At least Sully has partially redeemed himself since those days.
I had the privilege of seeing Barnes's smug mug the other day on Fox News (it and CNN Headline News are the only "news" available on JetBlue's stultifying TV lineup). He was on some panel with the execrable Shit Hume, William Kristol, and token "liberal" Mara Liasson (NPR). It's funny how people like that have made me warm somewhat to older-line right-wingers like William F. Buckley, who once seemed quite terrible. In contrast, he's not really so bad.
To clarify: I'm not lumping Mara Liasson in as a reactionary turd like Shit Hume or Fred Barnes, but she ain't no liberal, neither.
